Radon testing and mitigation in South Jersey

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that seeps up from soil and rock. High radon levels have been found in homes in every New Jersey county, and radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in people who don't smoke. Most buyers add a radon test to their home inspection.

Who can test

In New Jersey, radon testing and radon mitigation must be done by businesses certified by NJDEP. Each certified business and each certified technician has a certification number. Ask for it, and check that it appears on the paperwork you get.

What the number means

Radon is measured in picocuries per liter of air (pCi/L). NJDEP and the U.S. EPA recommend fixing the home if the result is 4 pCi/L or higher.

If the level is high

  • A certified radon mitigation business installs a system, usually a vent pipe and fan that pulls gas from under the slab.
  • The home is retested afterward to confirm the level dropped.
  • NJDEP recommends retesting every two years after a system is installed.
  • In a sale, buyers often ask the seller to install a system or give a credit.

NJDEP publishes the full list of certified radon businesses in its DataMiner database.
